Every other time I drive my 2003 chevy Tahoe the speedometer misreads. The cigerette lighter fuse is just above and slightly to the right of the radio fuse. The mileage is stored inside each clusters memory not in the vehicles computer. Had the same thing on my Chevy Tahoe. The 15A fuse for the trailer running lights is located in the fuse panel under the hood, next to the battery. The clips were fairly easy, but it was a pain getting the display loose from the white peg. The only way to get the speedometer working properly again is to pull over, put the car in park and then turn off the engine.
No deaths or injuries were ever attributed to the erratic gauges, but owners of the vehicles felt the problem was a safety concern. The gauges were re-set by starting and re-starting the car 10 times in a row. A major safety issue, in my opinion!! I was at a complete stop and it read 25 mph. This caught me off-guard and I stepped on the brakes, almost getting rear-ended. . This meant that you were unable to see what gear you were currently in, unable to determine the mileage of the vehicle, and unable to use the trip computer. We would need to stop, turn off the car and restart it for it to reset itself. Look along the left side of the panel, where the door would cover when closed. This does the same thing as pulling the fuse basically as it robs the power to it to start the car. The oill pressure gauge bottomed out at 40 and now it bottomed out at 0 and doesn't move even if the rpm goes up. Same story - person I needed to talk to not there. I will refuse to make any payments for speeding tickets as long as I am following with surrounding vehicles until my speedometer gets fixed.
