It seems it could be the solenoid on a broken clip. Unfortunately a lot of other cash was spent because of the initial miss. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. Remove the air cleaner and its fittings and reach down into the blackness. If you don't have one of these near you, check in your local phone book and call around to see if any of the parts stores near you offer this service.
Danny 5-31-11 I have a 99 expedition just bought!! Chilton's worthless didn't say where. That was a real easy job, especially when compared to changing the wires. I was told I needed a transmission, because of hard shifts and slipping out of gear, however it was the vss sensor, I just wanted to add that for those of you who are troubled, thanks again to the above post because it gave me hope I tried it and it worked! Remove Drivers side front wheel. Someone told me its a rear sensor; someone else told me its back by the rear left wheel, but I can't find it. Also when accelerating trans shifts normally but under light acceleration it shifts up and down. If so, maybe Ford sells that piece, otherwise junkyard it is.
I did -- No improvement. ! Another reason to test your 2 or 3 wire speed sensor is of course, your is acting up or not working at all. I was told by a parts guy that it is located in the dash, is this correct? You should be able to grasp it with a pair of crooked needle nose pliers, but it would be one hella tight fit!! Last night I re-attached the connector and then drove my Contour. Also where is it located? If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace printed circuit board and retest system. . Remove the dipstick tube and lifting eye retaining bolts. When the car is cold, the speedometer does not at all. Doesn't it just push on and pull off like other electrical connectors? The pin holds the speedo pinion carrier. Questions - did disconnecting battery mess something up? You will need to raise the front of the car and work on it from the bottom.
I saw that there might be another speed sensor of some kind under the dashboard but, I can't find anthing of the sore. Little wonder why the car dealers are hated as much as lawyers! Access by removing 'upper footwell trim panel' on passenger side, 4 pull-out pins, then stick your head in footwell and look up. But something that I should note here.
Got it back and not even half way down the road the service engine light comes on again. See Section 2 for the procedure. Its a very tight fit in there with some tubing and a bracket very close to the sensor. Crawl under car by firewall. An inspection can reveal a great deal of information on the overall condition of an engine.

Anyone know the location of the second sensor? Do you still feel that this is the same issue that you responded to? And another which looks like a little chip about 2 inches long. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. Do not jerk upwards on the sensor, when removing it, or you will run the risk of gear coming off the end of the sensor.
